Bali travel tips when you are in Bali

Watch your step
The average height of a stair in Bali is between 25-30 centimetres. Some western countries have an average height of 20 centimetres. 5 centimeters can make a huge difference. You would be surprised to know the number of sprained ankles or foot fractures resulting from the difference in stair height.

Watch out in the toilets
Generally, toilets in Indonesia are covered with ceramic tiles, which are somewhat slippery. Carpets and wall handles are not commonly found in public toilets. And don’t be surprised when you see the traditional toilet seat, where you have to squat over the hole! In addition to this, not every toilet has a flushing system. You still might find the “manual flush”, which is flushing with a bucket of water. As a rule, always bring your own toilet tissue as most public toilets don’t provide them.

Watch out on the road
As in most Asian countries, Indonesia’s traffic drives on the left hand side. Currently in Bali you should be extra cautious, not only when driving, but also when you’re walking. Bali’s city planning is developing a water sewer system, with extensive works all over the city, leaving large holes and gaps. Some are not adequately covered, which has lead to several accidents occurring with people, cars and even motorbikes falling into them. Also watch out for the open gutters. Some can be as deep as 2 metres!

Watch out when you’re crossing the road
Although jay walking is not advised, you might find it difficult to find a pedestrian crossing and not every traffic light has the “Walk” sign for pedestrians. Never run when you cross the road. Be extra cautious, looking for motorbikes, which can suddenly appear from any direction. Take extra precaution at night, as most traffic lights are not active after 10pm.

Watch out if you’re barefoot
When you’re at the beach, ask the locals whether there are sea urchins in the area. Don’t think about going barefoot anywhere else besides the beach, you just might step on offering incense, broken glass, nails, or any other dangerous material found on the footpaths and roads.

Watch out where you fall asleep
Falling asleep on the beach in the middle of the day can lead to massive sunburns or heat stroke. It might sound silly, but it happens.

Watch out for animals
The monkey forest is a major tourist attraction in Bali. Follow the guide’s instructions; do not attempt to feed or attract the monkey to you. Scratches or monkey bites could cost you dearly and you may end up in a medical centre or clinic where you may be required you to return frequently for further treatment. Not to mention the other associated risks such as infection and post-exposure vaccinations. Play safe and save your holiday. Stray dogs are also largely found in Bali. Be careful when you drive and walk.
